Orwell's 1949 masterpiece remains one of the most important and unsettling political novels ever written in English. Winston Smith's doomed effort to hold onto truth and love inside a totalitarian surveillance state — Newspeak, the Thought Police, Room 101 — gave the culture its vocabulary for describing the abuse of power, and that vocabulary has only grown more relevant.
