A Crucible of Souls

Mitchell Hogan's award-winning debut is a serious piece of fantasy world-building. The magic system is inventive and complex, protagonist Caldan's orphan-turned-apprentice arc is well-drawn, and the guild politics carry genuine intrigue. Before you pick it up, though, the content warning needs to be front and center: this is grimdark fiction with graphic violence — including violence against women used as a motivating plot device — and explicit sexual content. It is not appropriate for children, teenagers, or readers seeking clean fiction. The pacing is also notably slow; readers looking for immediate action will be testing their patience through much of the first volume. For adult fantasy fans who enjoy richly built worlds and can navigate dark material, the Aurealis Award recognition is well-earned. Everyone else should choose carefully.
