A Deadly Education

Naomi Novik's dark fantasy gets the magical-school genre's conventions and systematically disassembles them. Galadriel 'El' Higgins is a genuinely original protagonist — half-Welsh, half-Indian, with an affinity for catastrophic magic she refuses to use, perpetually furious and perpetually competent — and the Scholomance itself is a brilliantly menacing setting where half of all students die before graduation. The world-building is dense and inventive. The honest caveat is important: this is not a milder Harry Potter. There is graphic violence, student deaths, frequent profanity, bullying, sexual harassment, and sustained moral darkness. The faith-neutral magical framework and pervasive dark content make it a meaningful concern for faith-conscious readers. Readers 16 and up who want smart, sharp-edged dark fantasy will find it here.
