A Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Jules Verne Β· 2020
77/100
πŸ‘ Worth It

Jules Verne's 1864 adventure sends eccentric Professor Lidenbrock, skeptical nephew Axel, and stoic guide Hans through an Icelandic volcano into a subterranean world of underground oceans and Mesozoic creatures, following a runic clue left by a 16th-century explorer. They never reach the center β€” a volcanic eruption sends them back to the surface as celebrities β€” but the journey is the point. The faith-versus-doubt dynamic between the confident professor and anxious Axel gives the adventure genuine intellectual texture, and Verne's gift for making scientific speculation feel thrillingly plausible still works. The honest caveat: the science is entirely outdated by modern standards, the underground ocean section drags, and Axel's constant anxiety grows repetitive. Still a page-turning classic for ages ten and up, and a good conversation starter about what we know versus what we imagine.
