Book one of a seven-book saga set during the darkest days of the Irish Famine, and the setup, a fisherman's family choosing to stay and endure rather than emigrate, has real heart. It's available everywhere from libraries to audiobook, which speaks to staying power, but I couldn't find independent reviews to confirm the prose holds up. Worth a look for famine-era history fans, though I'd call this a cautious recommend rather than an easy yes.
