Van der Steen fills a genuine niche by connecting philosophy of biology to practical reasoning for working scientists, and the inclusion of exercises strengthens it as a teaching tool. The 1993 publication date and the density of the academic writing style limit its usefulness outside graduate seminars. Scholars in philosophy of biology may still find it a useful historical reference, but it has little to offer general readers.
