Coelho's fourteenth novel sends a fictionalized version of himself across Siberia by train, where he meets a young violinist named Hilal and discovers their lives are knotted together by a past-life encounter during the Spanish Inquisition. The Trans-Siberian setting is genuinely evocative, and fans of The Alchemist will find Coelho's accessible, quest-driven spiritual prose familiar. But the honest caveat here is substantial: the protagonist's dynamic with Hilal has been widely described as obsessive and emotionally troubling, the worldview is New Age and syncretic in ways that conflict with traditional Christian faith, and Kirkus was pointed in calling the philosophy thin. Mature content — including sexual fantasy and a past-life Inquisition scene — makes this adult-only reading. Existing Coelho devotees will embrace it; others are better served elsewhere.
