An Invitation to Health
Dianne Hales has been refining this college health textbook across nearly two decades and nineteen editions, and the result shows: it is one of the most durable and widely adopted student health texts on the market. The 2004 edition covers physical, mental, social, and sexual health through a lens specifically calibrated to college-aged readers β stress, nutrition, alcohol, drugs, and contraception all get substantive chapters. Hales writes with the clarity of a journalist rather than the density of a clinician, which makes the content genuinely accessible. The caveat is equally clear: this is a secular academic textbook with frank discussions of contraception and sexual health, and it carries no faith dimension whatsoever. It is not appropriate for children or readers who want a values-based health framework. For its intended college audience, though, it is a thorough, readable, and well-tested resource.
