Ancillary Mercy

Ann Leckie closes her Hugo, Nebula, and Clarke Award-winning Imperial Radch trilogy with Breq — a former warship AI now in a single human body — navigating a political crisis on Athoek Station with two warring versions of the empire's ruler pulling in opposite directions and a genuinely unsettling alien translator complicating everything. The prose is sophisticated, the exploration of identity, colonialism, and justice is serious literary science fiction at its best, and Leckie's choice to use 'she' for all characters regardless of gender has been one of the most discussed stylistic decisions in recent sci-fi. The caveat is structural: this is the third book in a trilogy and makes essentially no sense without reading Ancillary Justice and Ancillary Sword first. Some reviewers also felt the conclusion landed quieter than the first book's grand stakes promised. Still, a landmark series worth finishing.
