Ancillary Sword

Ann Leckie · 2015
77/100
👍 Worth It

The second book in Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch trilogy sends Breq — once a fragment of a vast warship AI, now commanding a single ship — to a colonial backwater that proves anything but peaceful. Where the first book swept across centuries, this one narrows its focus to a single station and its embedded injustices: exploited plantation workers, a troubled AI, simmering civil war. That focus is both the novel's strength and its limitation. The honest caveat is that this is not a standalone — readers who have not absorbed Ancillary Justice will be lost — and the pacing is slower and more interior than the first book. For those already in the trilogy, it is a thoughtful, award-winning exploration of power and moral responsibility within empire. Science-fiction violence is present but not excessive; no explicit sexual content.
