Antaeus

Antaeus was one of the defining American literary journals of the late twentieth century — founded in Tangier in 1970 by Daniel Halpern and Paul Bowles, and running until 1994 with contributors including W. H. Auden, Joyce Carol Oates, J. G. Ballard, and Yannis Ritsos. A 1992 issue or anthology volume represents the journal near its end, when its international modernist and postmodernist ambitions were fully established. The honest caveat is a structural one: reviewing a literary periodical issue as a book is an imprecise exercise — the specific content of any one issue varies dramatically, and without the physical volume in hand, individual pieces cannot be assessed. For serious adult readers of literary fiction and poetry, the Antaeus name is its own credential. Not suitable for children; mature literary themes throughout.
