Anxiety and Its Disorders

David Barlow's second edition is the foundational reference text for anxiety disorder research and clinical training, and it earns that status. The first half builds his influential theoretical model of fear, panic, and anxiety grounded in emotion theory; the second moves through every major DSM-IV category — panic disorder, social anxiety, GAD, PTSD, OCD — covering epidemiology, assessment, and evidence-based treatment in exhaustive detail. The American Journal of Psychiatry called it the most comprehensive book ever written on the topic, and that assessment is not hyperbole. The limitations are real: the academic writing is dense and inaccessible to general readers, and the DSM-IV framework has been superseded by DSM-5. A third edition has not appeared, leaving portions of the text dated. For clinicians, researchers, and graduate students, though, it remains a foundational resource that rewards serious engagement.
