Artemis Fowl

Eoin Colfer's 2001 debut is genuinely inventive — the conceit that fairies are a technologically advanced underground civilization being harassed by a child criminal mastermind is funny, surprising, and better executed than it has any right to be. Artemis is cold, calculating, and devoted to his mentally fragile mother, which gives him more emotional texture than most twelve-year-old antiheroes manage. The series has sold over 25 million copies for good reason. The honest caveats for faith-oriented families: the protagonist is literally a kidnapper running a ransom scheme, one troll fight gets quite bloody, and there's mild language throughout. Common Sense Media and Focus on the Family both clear it for ages 9-10 and up. Colfer earns the antihero premise — but parents of younger or sensitive readers should preview first.
