Bastion of Darkness

The long-awaited conclusion to Salvatore's Chronicles of Ynis Aielle — nine years after book two — delivers the epic confrontation fans were waiting for. The Black Warlock Thalasi raises an undead army with the Staff of Death, his wraith-general captures the young witch Rhiannon, and the heroes must battle into a dragon's mountain stronghold to turn the tide. The moral stakes are clear and the action pacing is classic Salvatore. The honest caveat is that the nine-year gap creates real continuity friction, and character development takes a back seat to battle throughout. Compared to the Drizzt Do'Urden books that made Salvatore famous, this trilogy closer is a lesser work — but it earns its place as a satisfying conclusion for readers who started the journey. Fantasy violence and dark sorcery make it appropriate for older teens and adults.
