Cameron Dokey's Beauty and the Beast retelling gives plain-named Annabelle a talent for wood-carving and a quest to find the legendary Heartwood Tree, which legend says reveals one's true love when carved by the right hands. It is a genuinely inventive substitution for the traditional rose, and Belle's desire to be seen as she truly is β€” rather than dismissed as misnamed and plain β€” gives the familiar story real emotional grounding. The romance is gentle and age-appropriate, emotional rather than physical, and the theme of seeing past appearances to the soul beneath is handled with warmth. The two consistent criticisms land: Belle and the Beast's time together is brief enough that the emotional payoff feels slightly rushed, and the series format's short length leaves the world and characters shallower than they could be. Still one of the stronger entries in the Once Upon a Time series.
