Breaking the Watch
Joel S. Savishinsky Β· 2000
77/100
π Worth It
Cornell anthropologist Joel Savishinsky spent five years following 26 people through retirement and wrote about it with the kind of narrative care that makes academic fieldwork read like real life. The Gerontological Society of America gave it book-of-the-year, and the NYT noted that the voices carry the book β which they do. It's a bit dated (2000) and geographically narrow, but for anyone approaching retirement who wants to understand the identity shift rather than just the finances, this is quietly excellent.
