Breakout Strategy
Breakout Strategy by Sydney Finkelstein, Charles Harvey, and Thomas Lawton is a business strategy book grounded in five years of research and built around a five-initiative framework: clarifying vision, crafting a value proposition, aligning operations to customer desires, balancing people and process, and rallying internal energy behind the strategy. Finkelstein is a respected Dartmouth Tuck School professor, and the co-authors' academic credentials give the framework more empirical weight than the typical business book built around a handful of case studies. Real examples of both successful breakouts and cautionary failures make the argument concrete. The honest caveat is that the business strategy genre is crowded and has only gotten more so since 2007, and some of the competitive landscape examples have aged. But for leaders and strategists who want a rigorously researched framework rather than anecdote-driven advice, it delivers a solid and structured approach.
