For nearly a century, Bulfinch's Mythology was the standard gateway to classical myth, Arthurian legend, and medieval romance for English-speaking general readers — and its Victorian prose remains genuinely accessible. Thomas Bulfinch deliberately sanitized his sources, removing the violence, sexuality, and moral complexity that characterize Ovid's originals, with the aim of producing what he called a classical dictionary for the parlour. That bowdlerization is both its strength and its limitation: families get a mythology compendium appropriate for older teens and adults, but scholars and curious readers will find significant omissions that alter the original meanings.
