Cain's Last Stand

Cain's Last Stand is the sixth installment in Sandy Mitchell's Ciaphas Cain series — Warhammer 40,000's answer to satirical military comedy — and it may be the best of the bunch. Pulling from a retired commissar forced back into action to defend a planet against the 13th Black Crusade with little more than a handful of cadets and his steadfast aide Jurgen, Mitchell balances genuine tragedy and emotional weight against the series' characteristic dry humor. Fans who have followed Cain's long career will find real satisfaction in where the character ends up. That said, this is firmly adult fiction: the grimdark violence, demonic horror, and battlefield brutality typical of the Warhammer 40k universe are present throughout, making it unsuitable for younger readers. Requires familiarity with the earlier books and the setting to land properly.
