Call of the Bone Ships

R.J. Barker's second Tide Child novel deepens everything that made the first compelling: the bone-ship world feels fully realized and genuinely alien, the examination of gender assumptions and ableism is substantive rather than superficial, and Joron Twiner's arc across the ensemble cast is one of the more carefully developed in recent epic fantasy. Fantasy-Hive and Queen's Book Asylum both praised the increased momentum over Book 1. The content warnings, however, are extensive and real — violence, slavery, torture, suicide, and graphic injury are woven through the narrative. This is adult epic fantasy operating at a literary level, not appropriate for younger readers or faith-conservative families who prefer to avoid that content. For adult readers who can engage with dark material in service of serious themes, it is a strong entry in a distinctive trilogy.
