CASTING OFF

Elizabeth Jane Howard · 1997
84/100
👍 Worth It

The fourth Cazalet Chronicle picks up in July 1945 as the family adjusts to peacetime England. Polly, Clary, and Louise — the younger cousins readers have followed since The Light Years — now navigate failed marriages, grief, new beginnings, and the drab reality of post-war austerity. Howard's prose is as elegant as ever, and her ability to hold a sprawling family in focus while letting each character feel genuinely individual is the series' great achievement. ANZ LitLovers and Northern Reader gave it the careful, positive attention it deserves. The caveats are structural: this is a fourth volume, and readers arriving without the earlier books will be lost in the cast and backstory. The leisurely pacing is also a feature for some and a frustration for others. For those already in the series, it's a rich and emotionally intelligent continuation.
