The ambition here is real — three generations of a Piedmontese family photographed across two world wars and the rise and fall of Fascism is genuinely rich territory. The photographic archive framing device is inventive, and the historical detail sounds immersive. But Kirkus found the execution routine despite all that scope, and fifteen principal characters is a heavy load for a single novel to carry without feeling crowded.
