Celebration of Discipline
Richard Foster's 1978 classic introduced millions of Protestant readers to twelve spiritual disciplines — from prayer and fasting to confession and celebration — and organized them into a framework that has shaped Christian formation literature ever since. Christianity Today named it one of the top ten religious books of the twentieth century, and that recognition is earned: Foster writes with warmth, depth, and genuine pastoral care. The caveat worth naming plainly is that some conservative evangelical readers have raised doctrinal concerns, particularly about the meditation chapter's engagement with Catholic contemplative mystics. Those concerns are real and worth knowing before you hand it to a small group. For most Christian adults seeking to go deeper in their spiritual life, this remains a landmark.
