Allen was a serious 19th-century scholar and this survey of early Christianity has genuine historical value as an artifact of Unitarian biblical scholarship. But the non-Trinitarian theological lens means orthodox Christian readers will find significant points of conflict, and the 1883 prose and scholarship methods are dated by a century of subsequent historical-critical work. Without modern editorial framing, this reprint is primarily of interest to historians of American religious thought rather than general readers.
