Classic Adventures According to Spike Milligan

Spike Milligan · 2003
86/100
👍 Worth It

Spike Milligan's final five parody books — Robin Hood, Frankenstein, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Black Beauty, and Treasure Island — are collected here in a 400-page tribute volume released after his death in 2002. His approach is absurdist and irreverent: Groucho Marx joins the Merry Men, the Frankenstein monster wakes up craving a cigarette, Black Beauty narrates her own story. Prince Charles called him 'an irreverent and hysterical presence,' and within British comedy circles these books were warmly received. A clear content note: the humor includes double entendres, alcohol references, and character names that are not family-appropriate (Little John is renamed Big Dick). This is adult comedy, not children's literature. For fans of classic British absurdism and literary parody, it's a lasting piece of a unique comedic voice.
