Curated by SF scholar and author Adam Roberts, this Macmillan Collector's Library volume gathers short speculative fiction from the 1750s through the early twentieth century — Poe, Wells, Lovecraft, Mary Shelley, and less-familiar voices including Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain and Florence McLandburgh. Roberts's editorial introduction places the stories in their broader literary-historical context, which adds real critical value. The physical object is beautiful: cloth-bound, gilt-edged, with a ribbon marker. The honest caveats are two: the anthology stops before SF's golden age, so modern readers get none of the genre's mid-century development; and Lovecraft's inclusion carries the well-documented weight of his racism, which parents of younger readers and some adult readers should factor in. For collectors and literary history enthusiasts, this is a handsome and thoughtfully assembled volume.
