Coming to Our Senses
Jon Kabat-Zinn is the researcher who built Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction into a clinical framework, and this 2005 book is his most expansive attempt to show how mindfulness practice applies not just to individual stress but to wider human healing. He draws openly on Buddhist origins while repositioning the practices in secular, neurological terms β and he is honest about that move rather than hiding it. The book is genuinely substantive and rewards careful reading. The honest caveats are significant for this audience: at over 600 pages it is demanding, the Buddhist conceptual framework is present throughout even in secular dress, and readers with traditional Christian faith commitments may find the spiritual-but-secular approach uncomfortable or at odds with their worldview. This is not a beginner's guide. For adult readers already drawn to mindfulness and open to its roots, it is an authoritative, comprehensive work.
