Sally Rooney's debut established her voice immediately: cool, precise, psychologically acute prose tracing 21-year-old Frances's secret affair with married actor Nick while her best friend and ex Bobbi grows closer to his journalist wife Melissa. The character study is genuinely sharp, and Rooney's ability to render self-deception and class anxiety without editorial judgment is impressive. Literary recognition followed quickly — Dylan Thomas Prize nomination, Folio Prize nomination, a BBC/Hulu adaptation. That said, this book carries explicit sexual content, frank depictions of self-harm, and an extramarital affair at its center. It is not for children, teens, or readers for whom marital fidelity is a firm value. Faith-family audiences should know what they are getting. For adult literary fiction readers, it is an accomplished debut worth knowing.
