Dacia Wolf & the Prophecy

Oyster has real material to work with — a protagonist carrying guilt over her brother's accidental death is a more emotionally weighty starting point than most YA fantasy debuts manage. The fast-paced plot and good-versus-evil clarity give it readability, but the world-building reportedly feels thin for a debut and the college setting creates an odd fit for the YA audience age bracket. Promising enough to watch the series develop, but not a confident first-buy without seeing stronger reception on later volumes.
