Damsel

Damsel is a 2019 Michael L. Printz Honor Book by Elana K. Arnold — lyrical, deliberately unsettling, and uncompromising in its feminist deconstruction of the damsel-in-distress trope. Prince Emory retrieves a woman named Ama from a dragon's lair with no memory of her past; what she slowly uncovers is an allegory for patriarchal captivity, gaslighting, and non-consent. The prose is genuinely beautiful and the subversion of fairy-tale convention is purposeful rather than gratuitous. But the content warnings are serious and non-negotiable: themes of rape culture and captivity are central, the experience is deliberately harrowing, and it is wholly inappropriate for children or younger teens. Parent review sites flag it as mature. For older teens and adults who can engage dark feminist allegory on its terms, the Printz recognition is well-earned.
