Dark Run

Mike Brooks's debut is a space opera that knows exactly what it is: a fast, fun ensemble caper aboard a smugglers' ship, with a morally complicated captain hiding a dangerous past and a crew whose loyalty is tested by a covert run to Earth gone sideways. The Firefly comparisons are unavoidable and accurate — found family, frontier ethics, a ship that barely holds together — but Publishers Weekly praised the quick action and sharp dialogue, and the secondary characters are drawn with enough personality to carry the ride. Kirkus was blunter about the derivative plotting, and that's fair: this is not a book that reinvents space opera. It's a book that executes familiar beats well enough to be genuinely entertaining. For adult and older teen science fiction fans who want a crowd-pleasing crew adventure, it delivers.
