Dash and Nikki wake up to find a jar of jellybeans and a note explaining a game — and through that simple setup, author Anthony DeLauney sneaks in a genuinely solid lesson about delayed gratification and sibling cooperation. The rhyming format keeps young children engaged, the illustrations are vivid, and a free educator lesson plan extends the book's usefulness into classrooms. It won a Mom's Choice Award and earned a positive Kirkus review, both well-deserved. The honest caveat is that the rhyme occasionally feels forced, and the core lesson is simple enough that children at the older end of the stated age range may move through it too quickly. For the four-to-six crowd learning what saving actually means, though, it's a warm and memorable introduction.
