The premise — that whale wizards perform a ritual Song to keep the land and sea separated, and that the role Nita is asked to play carries genuine existential cost — is handled with philosophical seriousness rare in middle-grade fantasy. Parents should know that characters briefly appear unclothed during whale transformation, and shark attack scenes carry real tension.
