Deep Work
Cal Newport's core claim is simple and well-supported: the ability to focus deeply on hard cognitive tasks is becoming rarer at exactly the moment it is becoming more valuable. The book builds that case with research and case studies, then delivers four concrete rules for cultivating the habit. The New York Times praised Newport as exceptional in the self-help space, and the book has sold millions of copies for a reason β the argument lands. The honest caveat is that some of the rules are more realistic for certain kinds of workers than others. 'Quit Social Media' is a legitimate strategy for a Georgetown professor; it is harder for a sales professional or community manager. The advice also tilts heavily toward knowledge work. Still, even readers who cannot implement every rule will find the framing of attention as a scarce resource genuinely clarifying. Highly recommended for students and professionals.
