Destroyer

Destroyer opens C.J. Cherryh's third subtrilogy within the Foreigner series, and returning readers will find exactly what they came for: intricate political maneuvering among the atevi, Bren Cameron navigating impossible diplomatic terrain, and the formidable dowager Ilisidi as a force of nature in her own right. The setup — civil war, a missing leader, an emergency landing — gives Cherryh room to deepen the series' richly detailed world of alien cognition and interspecies politics that remains among the most intellectually serious in science fiction. The caveat is firm: this is not a standalone entry point. Readers who haven't worked through the prior six books will be lost, and the dense political maneuvering that series fans love will feel inaccessible without that context. Start at the beginning. But for established Foreigner readers, Destroyer is a worthy continuation.
