Dragon's Blood

Jane Yolen · 1996
88/100
👍 Worth It

Jane Yolen's 1982 novel holds up beautifully. The planet Austar IV — a harsh desert world built on a system of bonded labor and dragon fighting pits — is one of the more convincing science-fantasy settings in young adult literature, and the bond between bond boy Jakkin and his secretly raised dragon Heart's Blood is the real engine of the book. Yolen grounds the relationship in empathy and mutual trust rather than dominance, which gives the coming-of-age arc genuine moral weight. Parents should know that dragon fighting is central to the plot; it is presented within a morally complex context rather than glorified, but it is not absent. Pacing is deliberate early before the action accelerates. For middle-grade and YA readers who love fantasy with real emotional stakes, this is a classic worth discovering. Worth it.
