Series ✦ Penny’s Take
Echoes of the War
James Matthew Barrie · 2019
76/100
👍 Worth It
Barrie — the creator of Peter Pan — brings the same emotional precision here to the people left behind by war: the charwoman who invents a soldier son, the father and son who cannot say what they feel before he ships out. These four short plays carry more weight than their modest length suggests, and the home-front perspective on WWI is both historically valuable and genuinely moving. The 2019 reprint adds nothing, but the plays themselves are well worth the time.
