Paul McAuley at his best is exactly this: plausible far-future societies built with real scientific discipline, wrapped around a human story with enough emotional stakes to keep you reading. Hari's revenge quest across a fractured Solar System is compelling, and the mostly-standalone structure means you don't have to have read the earlier Quiet War novels to follow it. The decapitated head early on signals that this is not a gentle book — adult hard-SF readers will feel right at home.
