Excession
A perfect black sphere appears at the edge of Culture space — older than the universe, immune to all known physics and communication — and Iain Banks uses it as a lens to examine what a post-scarcity civilization of godlike AIs actually does when it confronts something genuinely beyond its understanding. The ship Minds, each with a distinct personality and their own political agendas, carry most of the narrative through dense epistolary exchanges, and they are a genuine literary achievement. Human characters are thin by comparison, which Kirkus fairly criticized. This is not an entry point: it rewards readers already invested in the Culture series who want Banks at his most philosophically ambitious. For that audience, the scope and imagination are extraordinary.
