Families and Retirement

Szinovacz's edited collection was a genuine pioneer when it appeared in 1992, pulling together leading gerontology and family studies researchers to examine something that had been mostly overlooked: how retirement reshapes marriages, family roles, household labor, and emotional well-being. The multi-disciplinary approach is a real strength, and the SAGE imprint brings credibility. Contributors address gender and ethnic differences in retirement adjustment alongside multiple theoretical models, giving researchers real material to work with. The caveat is unavoidable — more than three decades of demographic, economic, and social change have passed since publication, and much of the empirical research base no longer reflects current retirees. Essential as a foundational text in the field, but researchers will need to supplement it substantially with current work.
