Self-help β¦ Penny’s Take
Fashioning China
Sara Liao Β· 2020
70/100
π Worth It
Liao's ethnographic fieldwork with 18 women inside China's shanzhai digital fashion economy gives this book something most academic monographs lack: firsthand human texture behind the theory. Academic reviewers praised both the sensitivity of the approach and the rethinking of counterfeiting as complex gendered labor. The audience is narrow and the price is high, but for readers inside media studies, gender studies, or China studies, this is a genuinely original contribution.
