Ysabeau Wilce built something genuinely unlike anything else in YA fantasy — an alternate California soaked in Spanish colonial history, with a magical house that breathes and a protagonist whose stubborn ambition feels real rather than performative. The invented terminology is dense enough to frustrate some readers early on, but those who push through will find a richly layered world with a lot more story left in it.
