Flow in Sports
Susan Jackson and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi bring flow theory directly into the gym, the field, and the training room in this 1999 foundational text. Jackson's doctoral research gives the book empirical roots, and Csikszentmihalyi's nine dimensions of flow β challenge-skills balance, loss of self-consciousness, autotelic experience and more β are mapped carefully onto athletic contexts with real quotes from athletes describing what peak performance actually feels like. The Olympic World Library holds a copy for good reason: this is a reference text, not a pop-science summary. The honest caveat is that academic writing and late-1990s research dating can make parts feel dry, and flow states remain genuinely difficult to operationalize β some practical guidance stays at the abstract level. For coaches and sport psychology students, it remains foundational.
