The fifth Inspector Lynley novel sends Lynley and Havers to Cambridge after a deaf undergraduate is found beaten to death during her morning run. Elizabeth George uses the investigation to open up a complex web — sexual harassment, a professor's affair with the victim, academic power plays, and a father using his daughter's death to protect his career ambitions. Publisher's Weekly and Kirkus both gave positive notices, and the BBC adapted it for the Inspector Lynley Mysteries series. George's evocation of Cambridge and her careful engagement with Deaf Pride and deaf community identity are genuine strengths. This is mature adult mystery: a brutal murder, extramarital affairs, and morally compromised characters throughout. Not recommended for family or faith-sensitive audiences, but a strong entry for the series faithful.
