Flathman's insight that discipline can actually enable rather than negate freedom is a genuine philosophical move, and he engages Foucault, Derrida, and the agonistic liberals rigorously. The problem is the prose is dense enough to exclude nearly everyone without a graduate background in continental political theory — the idea is more accessible in summary than in the book itself.
