Snook's account of the 1994 Black Hawk shootdown is one of the best organizational failure analyses written by anyone with the credentials to actually understand it from the inside — his concept of practical drift is genuinely useful and has entered the curriculum at business schools and military war colleges alike. The George R. Terry Award from the Academy of Management and praise from Charles Perrow confirm this is serious, rigorous work. Dense in places, and you'll want some interest in organizational theory, but the payoff is real.
