De Bono's core idea — that systemic negativity is a design flaw we can fix with better thinking tools — is still interesting decades on, and the lateral thinking framework has real provocative value. The problem is the prose: reviewers consistently find it labored and in need of stronger editing, and some of the prescriptions feel like period artifacts from 1979 despite the 2018 reissue. There are livelier books that apply lateral thinking to modern problems.
