Sachar does what he does best — takes a strange premise and makes it feel inevitable, moving fast and trusting young readers to keep up. The eco-thriller angle is genuinely alarming in the best way, the bullying subplot adds emotional stakes beyond the biohazard, and the Senate hearing framing device is clever. The ending is abrupt, but getting there is a pleasure. Kirkus called it a marvel of suspense and that's about right.
