Geraldine McCaughrean is one of the best living myth-retellers writing for children, and her lyrical prose makes these ancient stories feel alive rather than dutiful. The St. George story carries its Christian hagiographic roots faithfully, and the broader world-folklore collection gives young readers a genuine sense of how big the tradition of storytelling is. A lovely companion for classroom or family read-aloud, with the usual advisory that some hero-legend violence needs a parental look for the youngest readers.
