Great Expectations

Rick Geary's Classics Illustrated adaptation of Great Expectations does what the best of the series always aimed to do: it makes Dickens accessible without gutting what matters. Pip's journey from the marshes to London society, his entanglement with the convict Magwitch, the haunted Miss Havisham, and the cold Estella is compressed but the moral spine — the difference between inner worth and social status — remains intact. Geary's expressive, character-rich artwork is particularly well-suited to the Victorian milieu, and reviewers noted it 'could be enthusiastically received by librarians and teachers alike.' It works best as a doorway into the full novel rather than a replacement for it. Significant plot compression means subplots are lost. Family-safe with mild depictions of poverty and the convict system.
